Working Cars for Working Families
Knowing that most working families need a safe and reliable car, the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) has an ongoing initiative entitled “Working Cars for Working Families”, which is fighting for policy reform in the areas of used car sales and car finance. This is one of the many ways that NCLC helps in the effort to curb auto fraud. NCLC’s initiative also supports non-profit ownership programs that help struggling families get a car. To help low-income families get a car, www.workingcarsforworkingfamilies.org, has a “Find A Program” link that provides a searchable database of programs for those in need of a car and for those who wish to donate a car. The database allows you to search by zip code, state, and/or city to find a nonprofit organization that might be of assistance in getting a car. These organizations provide help such as distributing cars directly to families, making low-interest loans for car purchases, and/or facilitating matched savings for car down payments and purchases. The same site has a link to a searchable database to assist people who would like to donate a car to a low-income family.
