President’s Nominee to Head NHTSA Promises to Fight for Better Car Safety

President Barack Obama’s nominee to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told a Senate panel Wednesday that he would restore the agency’s reputation following the General Motors Co. and Takata Corp. recalls by increasing efforts to catch automakers who don’t report safety defects, and to enforce recalls.
Mark Rosekind told the Senate Commerce Committee that NHTSA needs to “be the enforcer,” in light of the historic recall of more than 56 million vehicles this year, including the high-profile ignition switch recalls by GM and the air bag recalls by Takata.
