US Bill to Stop Rentals of Defective or Recalled Cars

Federal legislation was introduced Friday in both the Senate and the House of Representatives toprevent companies from renting defective or recalled motor vehicles that have not been repaired, proposals the sponsors say would hold rental companies to the same standard as auto dealers.
The Senate bill, which has been proposed in each of the past three legislative sessions, was reintroduced Friday by U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and Bill Nelson, D-Fla. An identical bill was introduced in the House.
“Whether they come from the renter’s lot or a dealership, cars under recall should not be on the road until their defect is repaired,” Schumer said Friday. “This common sense legislation closes the dangerous loophole and holds rental companies to the same standard as auto dealers.”
